Homework Letter
Dear Parents,
Homework is an integral part of the fourth grade experience. I would like to share with you my homework policy in hopes that we can all work together to enable your child to complete homework to the best of his or her ability.
Homework is assigned with objectives in mind. It may be to practice, review, or apply what was learned in class as well as to develop independent study skills, self-discipline, and personal responsibility. Studying for tests is a new skill focus at the level. Homework is a direct outgrowth of my instructional program.
All homework will be checked and collected. Often students will self check their own homework as a learning experience. It is expected that all assignments will be completed satisfactorily and turned in on time. (Students who have been absent from school will, of course, be given ample time to complete the necessary missed work before it is considered overdue).
All assignments are written on the homework board in our room and recorded on my homework page of the school website. Students are expected to record all homework in their homework assignment planner provided by the school. There isn't homework on weekends and never over a vacation. There will be several long term independent projects assigned during the year with ample time to complete.
Homework at this grade level should take about 40 minutes and definitely not longer than one hour daily to complete. Most weeks homework consists of Math, studying for a weekly spelling test, and nightly reading. Every few weeks there will be science or social studies to review for a test or quiz. Time is given most days to start HW in class. If students make good use of the class time provided, they should have only about 20 minutes left to finish at home. If it is taking more than 60 minutes, please contact me so we can work on a HW plan.
When three HW assignments have been missed, parents will be notified by receiving all three student written awareness papers and a cover parent letter to be signed. The very next missed assignment will result in an after school parednt teacher, student conference where we will work on a HW action plan. After a conference the student then has a "clean slate" and the process starts over with the next missed assignment. Missing HW awareness papers are not carried over into the next marking period. Each new trimester is a fresh start.
Parents can be a partner in homework. I ask that you check your child's assignment book daily. When the homework is completed, please look it over for neatness and completion and initial it. If HW is taking too long or if your child does not seem to understand it, just stop working on it and please write me a note so I can assist the next day.
You are the most important person in your child's life. If you take the time to talk to your child about their homework, you will be sending a strong message that school work is important. Ask your child what they learned, found interesting, or challenging about their work. Establish a quiet place and time for your child to do homework. Make sure all the necessary supplies are at your child's work station. A large calendar to record due dates is very helpful.
Thank you for supporting your child to complete homework to the best of their ability. Call me if you wish to discuss homework in more detail.
